Let fear take control and begin frantically gathering belongings

Samuel’s thoughts shattered into motion. Hide this. Move that. Take down the notes. Find the contacts. Blow out the lamp. Whisper for Nathan to stay quiet.

By the time the knocking came again—harder now—the whole room felt like fear made visible.

Sasha was distressed. Nathan was near tears. Samuel himself no longer seemed like a refuge, only another frightened person inside the danger.

When the officers entered, they found a family already overwhelmed.

And though Jehovah surely understood their humanity, Samuel knew later that he had not given his wife and son the clearest help he could have given.
