Say nothing and walk away immediately
Nathan lowered his eyes and walked away.
Part of him was glad to escape the moment. But the relief did not last long. The next day, one of the boys called after him again. Then the day after that.
His silence had not protected him.
It had only taught the others that pressing him produced no resistance.
At home, Nathan grew quieter and less eager to talk about school. His parents sensed something was wrong, but by the time the details came out, the discouragement had already sunk deep.
