One sister nodded. “That’s true.”

The other smiled with a little embarrassment. “I suppose it’s easy to get carried away.”

Sasha said nothing, yet Samuel could tell she was grateful he had spoken.

A moment later Nathan came bounding over to ask whether giraffes could fit in the family car if Jehovah asked them to. The sisters laughed, the tension broke, and the morning moved on.

But not before Samuel noticed something in Sasha’s eyes.

The question was still there.

Only now it had gone inward.
